Foreplay
In formulating the Kamasutra, Vatsyayana considered that the size of
the partners sex organs needed to be taken into account prior to the
onset of foreplay. Both male and female sex organs were therefore
categorised, according to size, for the purposes of facilitating a 'good
match' between partners. Although not ruling out sexual relationships
with 'mis-matched' categories he did suggest that matching categories
would be more suited.
Vatsyayana recognised that a sexual encounter would be more
fulfilling when taking into account; emotional ties, the duration of
foreplay and the actual intercourse. Little was known however of female
sexuality and it may at first be somewhat surprising that foreplay was
considered extremely important. However, it is discussed that male
excitement ends with ejaculation whereas a woman can continue on and it
was known that many women were left unsatisfied by men who ejaculate too
quickly.
Female sexual excitement is described as an itch of the vagina which
takes a great deal of friction to alleviate. It is suggested that
masturbation is a suitable temporary remedy for her itch but that she
will ultimately be left unfulfilled by the lack of kissing and the
absence of male sperm.
Foreplay was vital to provide an erotic experience to women and to
ensure their love and admiration for their partner and kissing and
caressing will make even non cooperative women quickly discover the
pleasures of sex.
The attention to foreplay is equally the responsibility of the woman
as it is her that will benefit most from it and sex cannot be successful
and fulfilling unless both partners achieve orgasm. The woman should
tease the man appearing reluctant and modest before finally succumbing
to the passion and letting herself go.
